Dodging holiday perils to pets

As much as we love the holidays, the pet parents among us need to be on alert. Not all that glitters and tantalizes our taste buds is safe for our furry, feathered or scaly friends.

When it comes to decorations, everything from the tree to the tinsel, from electric lights to exotic plants can be perilous to pets. Candles, potpourri and essential oils can also cause problems.

Holiday spreads are hazardous, too. In general, it’s best to keep all people food away from pets. Even meat-based foods, like turkey skin or gravy, or certain veggies and fruits, like onions and grapes, can make pets super sick. Keeping our pets safe includes pet-proofing the trash—even taking it out when we leave home.

Just to be on the safe side, it’s smart to ID your closest veterinary emergency clinic and know the fastest way to get there if necessary.
