Do unto pooches …

One theory of dog training holds that a pooch parent should be the leader of his pack by displaying dominance over his dog. But that approach just breeds more fear and aggression.

Instead, dogs — like people — respond to an empathetic tone from their ‘bosses.’ They warm to reasonable communication, a pleasant voice and a chance to have some control over their lives.

We also need to get better at reading our dogs’ feelings. For example, a dog with flattened ears that’s yawning or standing low to the ground is likely afraid or feeling threatened.

And simply hollering at our dogs doesn’t help. Instead, we need to model what we’d like them to do.

We think a lot like our canine companions — that’s why our bonds run so deep. So when in doubt, treat your pooch like you want to be treated. Your bond will only grow stronger.
