Common Equine Emergencies (Archive from Dec. 18, 2020)

Horses, by nature, are accident-prone due to specific behaviors, including their instinctive flight-or-fight response, dominance hierarchy and natural curiosity. Cuts, bruises and lacerations are among the most common equine emergencies, along with colic, foaling difficulties, acute lameness, and infectious diseases, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners. On this show, Dr. Martha Mallicote, an equine medicine specialist, will discuss common equine emergencies, when to call the veterinarian and what action horse owners can take in these situations while awaiting veterinary care for their animal.
