Chonky cats: the dark side of the social media craze

You may have seen them already—the social media posts of so-called “chonky” cats. These rotund felines are exploited as adorable, chubby cherubs. But there’s something dangerous going on here.

Not only are these plump feline models at risk of poor health—so are the cats of pet parents who think it’s a trend worth emulating. Already, an astounding 50% of US pets are overweight.

You might think that a few pounds of extra baggage on your cat isn’t a big deal. But even 2 pounds of overage can increase the risk of joint pain, heart disease or dermatologic problems. What’s more, such fulsome felines are 4 times more likely to develop diabetes.

If your cat’s in good shape, you should be able to feel the ribs and make out a waist behind them. If you’re having a tough time discerning what’s what, your veterinarian can help you out.
