Chilling out during the dog days of summer

When your dog’s having fun in the sun, can you count on her stopping before she overheats?

Dogs primarily lose heat by panting, which is a pretty inefficient way to cool down, especially when it’s humid outside. Unfortunately, dogs can’t chill out by panting as quickly as we humans can by sweating.

Many dogs will play until they drop, and by then they may be physically exhausted and already overheating. That’s especially true of a paunchy or unfit pooch. Short-nosed breeds, like pugs and boxers, are also at higher risk because their respiratory anatomy slows air flow.

So try exercising with your dog during the coolest times of day and in shady areas. Or consider hosing your dog down before activity in the sun.

Remember, it’s up to you to make playtime safe during the dog days of summer.
