Turtles and tortoises — collectively known as chelonians [chell-Ō-nee-uhns] — may seem indestructible but they’re susceptible to injury like every other animal. Whether from being dropped, hit by a car or bitten by a dog, shell trauma is a common problem.
Although the chelonian shell may seem like an inert piece of armor, it’s not. It consists of vascular, neurologically sensitive bone plates covered with scutes that shed periodically.
When the shell is damaged, the underlying bone can fracture, sometimes exposing vulnerable organs — like the lungs and abdominal structures — beneath. That’s why significant shell trauma requires prompt veterinary attention instead of an at-home fix. Fortunately, veterinarians with reptile expertise have many options at their disposal for treating their shell-shocked patients.
