Considering the various injuries that can befall cattle, you might think a swollen joint is no big deal — never mind an emergency. But that’s not the case.
Whatever the cause, joint swelling involves inflammation, which can damage the joint. Septic — or infected — joints are extremely painful and can cause even more destruction, which could be permanent.
Just because joint swelling could result from trauma, never assume it will resolve on its own. Instead, closely monitor the animal for increased swelling as well as lameness, lethargy or a decreased appetite. If the swelling doesn’t resolve within 24 hours, it’s time to call the veterinarian. Waiting longer could subject the animal to chronic lameness, arthritis and even a shorter lifespan.
