Calling all pet foods

Calling all pet foods

In 2007, animal owners nationwide were shocked to learn that a toxic chemical called melamine had been introduced into some pet food from mislabeled nutrients manufactured in China.

This mix-up resulted in the tragic death of several dogs and cats from kidney failure linked to the tainted food. Although this was the most publicized pet-food recall in recent memory, it was not the first and will not be the last.

In 2010 alone, numerous products were recalled because of possible contamination or because they contained too few or too many nutrients.

To find out about recent recalls, visit the Food and Drug Administration’s website, w-w-w-dot-f-d-a.gov.

If you discover that your pet’s food is on the list of recalled products, stop feeding that food immediately and contact your veterinarian for more information. Better to waste some food than to risk your pet.
