Buy into biosecurity

Those of you with backyard poultry may be aware of viruses that can potentially fall from birds migrating overhead. The fact is, your birds need protection against germs that can threaten them from all directions. By practicing biosecurity — protocols designed to protect animals from disease — you can drastically reduce the risk of serious infection.

Start by keeping your feathered friends away from visitors, including other birds. You can also foil the spread of germs by regularly cleaning your shoes, equipment, cages and vehicles. And while it may not seem neighborly, refrain from sharing your equipment with others.

Finally, check out the U.S. Department of Agriculture website to learn the symptoms of infections like bird flu or Newcastle disease. That way, you can immediately recognize and report suspicious findings to your veterinarian.
