Bringing Home a New Puppy

Bringing Home a New Puppy

The waiting is over, and your new puppy is finally coming home. You’re ready with food, toys, and other puppy paraphernalia. Now what?

Well, it’s a good idea to schedule a veterinarian visit as soon as possible for that first exam and to set up worming and vaccination schedules.

If you haven’t already, make sure to “puppy-proof” your home by gating off forbidden places and removing breakables, plants and other temptations.

Be prepared for several weeks of housebreaking, taking your pup outside after sleep, play, crate time and meals.

Introduce your pup to people and pets gradually, keeping each a positive experience. But try to limit contact with older dogs until your pup has had a complete series of puppy shots.

Veterinarians, books, dog trainers and some websites can all help answer the million other questions you probably have. After all, the joy is often in the discovery.
