Benefits of Minimally Invasive Orthopedic Surgery in Pets

Orthopedic surgery in veterinary medicine involves treating conditions involving pets’ musculoskeletal system – bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Depending on the nature of the disease a dog or cat has, minimally invasive surgical techniques may be employed to treat the problem. Minimally invasive surgery has become increasingly common in veterinary medicine with improved technology and the known benefits of reducing the patient’s pain level, as well as time of hospitalization, and because recovery is believed to often be faster than with traditional surgery. Dr. Matt Johnson, a small animal surgeon, will discuss some of the conditions for which minimally invasive surgery is often used, and why this approach, when it can be used, is appealing to pet owners as well as to veterinarians performing the procedures.
