Beat holiday stress with these tips

Beat holiday stress with these tips

The holidays are a time for family and cheer, but making sure the house is clean, the food is ready and every present wrapped can be overwhelming. All these tasks can add unwanted stress and depression in a time meant for happiness.

Try these tips from the Mayo Clinic to help reduce your angst.

Plan ahead. Decide which events you can attend and which you can’t. If you’re hosting, settle the menu early, so you can get grocery shopping done in advance. Ask for help with your to-do list.

It’s OK to say no to holiday gatherings. The world won’t end if you’re not at all of them.

When you start shopping for gifts, make a budget and stick to it. Debt is a huge cause of stress, so avoid it.

Set a relaxing mood. Light citrus-scented candles, which can boost feelings of well-being. Put on some music or a virtual fireplace.

Maintain healthy habits. A short morning workout — even just a walk — will set the tone for the day and help your decision-making. Encourage family members to get outside.

Share feelings. If you’ve suffered a loss and know your emotions are raw, open up about it. Many have been in that boat and can share how they managed. New traditions might take some of the sting away.

Family members will have different viewpoints than your own. Try to forgive, forget and remember that we’re all in this together.

Be realistic. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of great. Relax and enjoy the company around you.

And finally: While you’re making everyone else’s holidays bright, don’t forget about your own. Take a nap. Go catch a movie or give yourself a facial.

You deserve a wonderful holiday, too.
