If you thought you and your pet were out of the reach of Lyme disease, think again. You might have a new neighbor in your neck of the woods.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council recently reported that cases of Lyme disease have ticked up in some regions that were previously low-risk.

Overall, the prevalence of canine Lyme disease has been rising, too. The numbers foreshadow a greater risk for people as well. So, it’s more important than ever to protect your pet from ticks carrying infectious organisms.

Year-round tick protection is essential. Several species of ticks can spread Lyme disease during different seasons and in various regions. The further south you are, the more active ticks are in the winter.

One last thing: it doesn’t take a walk in the woods to encounter ticks. They can be anywhere — including right in your own backyard.
