A senior dog’s change of life

A senior dog’s change of life

As dogs age, they change their ways—especially late in life. But it’s not always due to one thing.

A behavioral issue — like separation anxiety, aggression or a phobia — can affect a dog of any age. But if it first crops up during the golden years, chances are it’s secondary to a medical problem. The most common painful conditions in elderly dogs involve the joints or the digestive tract. And that pain can sometimes manifest as restlessness or aggression.

If all else has been ruled out, cognitive dysfunction may be the problem. Affected dogs often seem dazed and unsteady, and their interactions with people and other pets in the family tend to change as well.

So, if your pal isn’t the pooch you once knew, team up with your veterinarian to find out why. Then resolve to make life as comfy as possible for your furry friend.
